|
 |
|
Program Overview
The Department of Geography at the University of
Edinburgh aims to combine high quality research with adventurous
teaching. Our four research themes, spanning the whole of Geography,
scored a top 5* grading in the last research assessment exercise. Our
research is closely integrated with our teaching, providing a wide range
of stimulating courses, led by researchers at the forefront of their
fields.
We have a vibrant postgraduate community in the Department undertaking
the full range of degree programmes from the Ph.D. to the M.Sc. in
Geographical Information Science. In the Scottish tradition, the
Department offers broad, interdisciplinary undergraduate degree
programmes, available both through the Faculty of Science and
Engineering (B.Sc.) and the Faculty of Social Sciences (M.A.). Our
students are drawn from the United Kingdom, the European Union, North
America and many other countries. |

School of Surveying
University of East London
|
|
|
Program Overview
"The School of Surveying, based at the Barking
Campus, offers courses centered around Land Surveying and Geographic
Information Systems (GIS). The courses cover the general topic and
include applications in land and property management and business. The
programmes of study range from HNC and HND through B.Sc degree and
post-graduate M.Sc. with research opportunities also available.
Specialised short courses can also be arranged to suit an organisation's
need. The School also co-ordinates the University's BSc (Hons) Geography
programme in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Sciences,
Department of Cultural Studies and the Department of Sociology.
The School has dedicated laboratory facilities to support its teaching
and research with specialist facilities for surveying measurement,
photogrammetry and GIS. The School has a range of surveying equipment
including Leica, Geotronics, Sokkia and Topcon Total Stations, Leica and
Trimble GPS systems as well as specialist precision measurement
equipment and digital photogrammetric systems. A range of GIS solutions
are also used including ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, MicroStation and
ERDAS (also for remote sensing and image processing).
The courses are designed to mix theory with practice and it is here that
use is made of the dedicated laboratories and campus facilities.
Undergraduate courses include residential field work and industrial
visits. In 1998 the School was assessed by the funding council for its
quality of teaching and was awarded a score of 21 out of a maximum 24
for its work. The courses are recognised by authorities around the world
and undergraduate courses are recognised by the Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors and the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors
in the UK." |

Curtin University of Technology
School of Spatial Sciences
Perth, WA, Australia
|
 |
|
Program
Overview
The School of Spatial Sciences at Curtin
University of Technology is a leading educational institution in
Australia for teaching and research in surveying, cartography,
geographic information science and related areas. At the
undergraduate level, it offers the only comprehensive degree
program in surveying in Western Australia, the only three year
cartography degree in Australia, and one of a small number of
bachelor degree programs in Australia in GIS. In cooperation
with the Western Australian School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, it
also provides both an associate degree and a degree program in
mine and engineering surveying. At the postgraduate level, the
School offers courses in its specialist areas and also supports
a program of Continuing Professional Education. The School is
noted for the high quality of its graduates and the contribution
they make to scientific and professional life.
The spatial sciences involve the measurement and management of
data concerning the earth's physical and man-made features. It
is a science- and engineering-based discipline which includes
the specialist fields of surveying, cartography and geographic
information science.
Surveying emphasises the measurement and collection of spatial
data, which includes land and cadastral surveying, satellite
positioning and navigation, aerial photogrammetry, satellite
remote sensing, engineering surveying, mine surveying,
hydrographic surveying, geodetic surveying, land information
management and land planning.
Cartography focuses on the representation and management of
spatial data, which includes areas such as topographic and
thematic mapping, photogrammetric mapping and remote sensing,
map production/reproduction, computer-assisted mapping, and land
and geographic information systems.
Geographic information science involves the computer capture,
display, management and analysis of geographic phenomena in
space. Such geographic data are manipulated by geographic
information systems which are designed and tailored to encompass
a wide range of applications in the natural and the built
environment. |

Department of Geomatics
The University of Melbourne
Australia
|
|
|
Program
Overview
The Department of Geomatics has evolved from
the Department of Surveying, which was established in 1949
although surveying has been taught in the University since 1861.
The new name encompasses the broad scope of modern measurement
science, land information science and spatial data management.
Today the Department is a thriving centre and educates students
from a wide range of backgrounds in all of the Geomatic
disciplines to prepare them for a satisfying Geomatic career.
Joint Initiatives:
The Department in association with the Department of
Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of
Melbourne provides The Centre of Geographic Information Systems
and Modelling, which carries out research on geographic
information systems, their applications, environmental
visualisation and modelling, and to provide a focus for
University teaching in these areas. |

University of Southern Queensland
Surveying and Land Information
Australia
|
|
|
Program
Overview
The Bachelor of Surveying course provides
students with the educational requirements to become a
professional surveyor and the ability to undertake postgraduate
studies. The course equips students with a core of basic
scientific, analytical, management, professional, research and
communication skills that will permit them to undertake an in
depth study of the science and practice of surveying.
In addition, students obtain a knowledge of the natural, legal,
commercial, industrial and social environments in which they
will function as professional surveyors. The course instils in
students the need for continuing professional development and
the ability to adapt to change. The course is designed to
identify students who have the capacity to undertake study at an
advanced level and to make an original contribution to science
and practice of surveying. The award of honours will be
determined by academic performance and is normally based on a
student's grade point average (GPA). |
